15th Annual Spring River Cleanup Brings Out Record Number of Volunteers!

April 28, 2010

Milwaukee Riverkeeper's 15th Annual Spring River Cleanup went off without a hitch on Saturday, April 17th at 49 sites throughout Milwaukee.

A heart-felt thanks to each and every one of the 3,700 volunteers that came and lent a hand for their local river and river parkway.

Areas all across the Milwaukee River Basin are looking spotless and they wouldn't be without everyone's hard work and diligent effort.

Come Out and Support Milwaukee's Central Park

Milwaukee County panel opposes Waukesha's plan for wastewater effluent

April 26, 2010

[excerpted from JS-Online]

Milwaukee County would go on record opposing the use of Underwood Creek and other county streams for treated sewage effluent from Waukesha, under action endorsed by a County Board panel Tuesday.

The board's parks committee voted 4-2 to oppose Waukesha's plan to use the streams as a means to return Lake Michigan water the western suburb wants to buy. The full County Board will take up the question April 22.

The Verdict is In: Preserve the County Grounds

April 22, 2010

At a public meeting held on April 20th, Wauwatosa residents made it clear that they want the Milwaukee County Grounds saved.

The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee is proposing to construct an Engineering Campus (known as Innovation Park) on 89 acres of the Milwaukee County Grounds. Milwaukee Riverkeeper is concerned that this development is much larger than the 70 acre Economic Development Zone delineated on the Master Plan for the County Grounds (Kubala Washatko et al. 2004), of which only 42.2 acres were delineated for development and 28.7 acres for conservation.

Help Support the Department of Natural Resources in Limiting Phosphorous Pollution to Our Waterways!

April 21, 2010

Milwaukee Riverkeeper is calling on our members and friends to support clean water in Wisconsin rivers, streams and lakes by supporting the Department of Natural Resources's proposed standards to limit phosphorous pollution.

Phosphorous pollution causes algae growth which threatens public health, property values and tourism.  Not only does algae contribute to smelly discolored water, but it threatens fish life and can be toxic to humans and animals.

So you want to go Paddling?

Milwaukee Riverkeeper Board member, Dan Gray, recently published an expose in the Bayview Compass on canoeing/kayaking around the Milwaukee area.

The article features the Milwaukee Urban Water Trail, a project of Milwaukee Riverkeeper, which details public access points and makes it easier to navigate our local rivers.
