2010 Milwaukee River Report Card
It is with a great sense of pride and accomplishment that Milwaukee Riverkeeper presents you with its inaugural Milwaukee River Report Card. Since 2006, Milwaukee Riverkeeper has trained more than 150 citizens to monitor water quality throughout the Milwaukee River Basin. This report card would not be possible without their tireless efforts and for that we owe our volunteers our upending gratitude.
In particular, based on data collected by a dedicated group of volunteer team monitors in 2010, and supplemented with information from the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (WDNR) and the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District (MMSD), this report card is intended to provide you with a tool to evaluate the condition of the river for basic water quality parameters, such as dissolved oxygen, temperature, turbidity, pH, macroinvertebrates, chlorides and bacteria.
As you will read each page, I hope you will reflect upon the role our area waterways play in our quality of life, economy and sense of place. You will undoubtedly note that much work still needs to be done to realize our vision of a “fishable swimmable” Milwaukee River, but also note that progress is being made. This progress can be attributed to the support of communities, organizations and individuals throughout the Milwaukee River Basin and beyond, all of whom understand that restoration and protection of our rivers must be our legacy to future generations.
