New Arboretum Planned for Milwaukee's Central Park
The Journal-Sentinel reported that plans were unveiled for a newly - fashioned park along the Milwaukee River. It relies heavily on existing public land (known as Milwaukee's Central Park) to help make a slice of green space on the city's east side become more user-friendly.
The Arboretum would run adjacent to the Central park along the river from E. North Ave. to E. Locust St. It would in essence become a gateway to make the natural river area more accessible, and expand the greenspace by reclaiming industrialized land.
The proposed park would rely on the donation of more than 4 acres from Pieter Godfrey, who owns land along the river south of Riverside Park.
Easements also are anticipated from Wisconsin Paperboard and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, the organizers said.
The park would be known as Rotary Centennial Arboretum. It is named for the Rotary Club of Milwaukee, which is raising $400,000 to mark the 100th anniversary of the founding of the organization in Milwaukee.
